Chandigarh Tricity History

“Chandigarh was designed by world-renowned French architect Le Corbusier. Situated near Shivalik mountains, Chandigarh stands as an outstanding example of modern planning and architecture in India.

This city derives its name from Chandi Mandir nearby, dedicated to “Chandi” as “goddess of power” and “garh” laying beyond the temple. Accordingly, “Chandigarh” could be translated to mean the fort dedicated to Chandi or fortress dedicated to Chandi as goddess of strength and so forth.

It became the capital of Punjab in 1953. Although some changes and separations took place within its city boundaries, Chandigarh continued its rapid development throughout. Even after another split occurred in 1966, its growth and development continued apace.
In simple terms, Chandigarh is an elegant city known for its master planning. Since becoming Punjab’s capital city, its growth has skyrocketed; making this destination known for its innovative designs.”

Why it’s called tricity?

Chandigarh serves as both Haryana and Punjab capital cities and lies between Panchkula (Haryana) and Mohali (Punjab), collectively referred to as Tricity due to their closeness in both business and climate conditions.

Chandigarh residents speak Haryanvi, Punjabi, and Hindi fluently; being close to Himachal Pradesh also means many hill dwellers are prevalent there who can speak their native tongue fluently as well.

Panchkula: This name comes from its location where five canals for irrigation converge, bordered by Zirakpur, Chandigarh, and Mohali – much like Chandigarh itself it consists of sections. Due to being so near Chandigarh both cities share similar climate conditions as well as cultures; making Panchkula one of the key components of Haryana Tricity.

Mohali (SAS Nagar in Punjabi), located to the southwest of Chandigarh is one of three significant districts comprising Tricity on Punjab side. As one of three planned towns with sections and phases similar to Chandigarh and Panchkula. A lot of people reside here due to its closeness with Chandigarh making Mohali one of Tricity’s primary constituents in terms of residential life.

Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali make up Tricity; all three cities sharing similar climate and cultures as well as being economically interdependent with one another.
